MANTA

Acrónimo
MANTA

Resumo Inglês
The mesopelagic zone, from 200 to 1000 meters depth, is one of the largest and least understood ecosystems, hosting a vast biomass of fish and invertebrates. This "twilight zone" plays a critical role in global carbon cycling and supports a complex food web, including iconic deep-diving predators like blue sharks and sicklefin devil rays. However, this fragile ecosystem faces mounting threats from climate change and increasing pressure for industrial-scale biomass extraction, which could disrupt its ecological balance with cascading effects on ocean health and biodiversity.
The MANTA project aims to fill critical knowledge gaps in mesopelagic ecology by advancing innovative technologies to study predator-prey interactions in this enigmatic zone. Central to this effort is the development and deployment of the MANTA microsonar camera tag, a cutting-edge multisensor biologging platform that builds on the breakthroughs achieved in the INNOVATE and ECOTAG projects. These precursor initiatives are developing the core components for this next-generation tag, including a compact microsonar for prey detection and a low-cost, high-resolution animal-borne camera. MANTA will integrate these components with other advanced sensors, such as bioluminescence detectors and environmental data loggers, to capture fine-scale behavioral data with unprecedented detail.
This novel technology will provide the first high-resolution, in situ observations of mesopelagic prey composition, predator foraging strategies, and their interactions with the physical environment. By deploying this sophisticated tag on key apex predators, the project will uncover the ecological dynamics that link mesopelagic resources to the broader oceanic ecosystem, providing critical insights into the foraging strategies and habitat use of marine megafauna. These unique datasets will reveal previously hidden aspects of the mesopelagic food web, transforming our understanding of this vast, yet largely unknown, ecosystem.
Specifically, the research plan is designed to address two main hypotheses:
Hypothesis 1: Mesopelagic organisms represent a significant prey resource for deep-diving elasmobranchs, with deep-diving behaviour serving as a critical component of the foraging strategies of both mobulas and sharks. This highlights the fundamental link between the ecology of deep-diving predators and the structure and dynamics of the mesopelagic prey community.
Hypothesis 2: The combined impacts of mesopelagic biomass extraction and ocean warming will significantly alter the abundance, composition, and distribution patterns of the mesopelagic community. Such changes are expected to disrupt predator-prey dynamics and will likely impact global climate regulation.
To fully exploit this data, the project will integrate these findings into the SEAPODYM (Spatial Ecosystem and Population Dynamics Model) framework, a powerful tool for linking physical and biogeochemical ocean processes with biological dynamics. By incorporating high-frequency, in situ predator-prey interaction data, MANTA will enhance SEAPODYM’s ability to simulate mesopelagic prey fields and assess the impacts of climate change and potential biomass extraction. These simulations will provide critical insights for science-driven management strategies aimed at preserving marine biodiversity and ecosystem resilience in the face of rapid environmental change.
Aligned with global conservation priorities, including the UN's 30x30 initiative, MANTA will also address the unique challenges of monitoring vast, remote Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), such as the Azores MPA network, the largest in the North Atlantic.

Resumo Inglês
Marine megafauna such as the loggerhead and green turtle serve as valuable sentinel species due to their wide-ranging behavior and sensitivity to environmental change. These species have been proposed as indicators for assessing Good Environmental Status (GES) under the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), yet substantial knowledge gaps persist, especially regarding green turtle ecology. To fill these gaps, the project aims to: (1) evaluate sea turtle population connectivity using advanced genomic and analytical methodologies, (2) develop new assessment tools to improve in- water abundance estimation, (3) analyze the role of sea turtles as bioindicators of ecosystem health, and (4) promote knowledge transfer and capacity building. By integrating multidisciplinary approaches, this project will develop dynamic, adaptive conservation strategies and contribute to an integrated biodiversity monitoring framework for the Azores region.

Resumo Inglês
In macaronesia there is an important production of animal by-products and derivatives, which are produced as a consequence of livestock activity and related transformation processes. At present, most of these by-products, corresponding to livestock waste, are poorly managed by producers, which has an important environmental impact on the natural environment, affecting biodiversity, soils, groundwater and the atmosphere. Part of these by-products is managed through a temporary exception to European law. It is therefore necessary to find solutions to this situation, which furthermore negatively affects the productive economy of the producers of these by-products. This project aims to find methodologies that allow changing the current dynamics, resulting in better conservation and restoration of the Macaronesian natural environment and reducing the environmental impact of the primary sector, especially in the context of expected climate change.

Recursos naturais biológicos renováveis como fonte de compostos de extração para promover o setor industrial, ciência e tecnologia, num quadro de economia circular e sustentabilidade ecológica

Acrónimo
NATUR-EXT

Resumo Inglês
The rich biodiversity of the Macaronesian region is well-known. However, its economic, scientific, and industrial exploitation is limited by the lack of scientific and technical support that would allow for its viability and utilization. This encourages the disuse of the region's rich native resources, which have not found a way to overcome this problem. NATUR-EXT was created as a solution to this problem, through the creation of a bioindustrial platform focused on the transformation of biological raw materials. This industrial need requires opting for biotechnological solutions that offer sustainable and respectful growth models; all of this, within a circular economy framework that promotes the development of value chains that promote optimal waste management, the resolution of environmental problems, the restoration and utilization of soils, and so on. All of this, utilizing renewable energy generation systems for self-consumption, creating a closed and sustainable cycle. The platform will cover the various stages that make a product viable; from experimental-scale research to its scaling and transfer to industry.
This goal requires demonstrating to the business sector the potential and necessity of moving from a linear to a circular economy, involving training activities. This training will be extended to third countries, enabling the advancement of a sector that reaches beyond the Macaronesian borders.

Aquisição de equipamento científico para o Nó do European Marine Seafloor Observatory- Açores, no Monte submarino Condor.

Acrónimo
EMSO-Azores-Condor

Resumo Inglês
The Azores archipelago is situated at the complex junction of three lithospheric plates and an underlying mantle plume, an area marked by intense seismic and volcanic activity. This region hosts 63 major and nearly 400 minor seamounts, which are biodiversity hotspots critical to fisheries, tourism, and marine ecosystem services. Despite their ecological and economic importance, these seamount ecosystems are vastly underrepresented in long-term ocean observation networks.
EMSO-Azores-Condor is a fixed-point deep-sea observatory planned for deployment at approximately 800 metres depth on the Condor Seamount, one of the few observatories worldwide located on a seamount. Its primary goal is to capture high-resolution, long-term integrated time-series of environmental parameters to study benthopelagic coupling and ecosystem dynamics in this unique deep-sea habitat. The project builds upon the foundations laid by the EEA-funded Condor project, which pioneered the concept of a multidisciplinary observatory for experimental and monitoring purposes, involving a diverse network of regional, national, and international partners.
The observatory will continuously monitor interactions between the biosphere and hydrosphere, spanning the seafloor to the overlying water column, delivering persistent, multi-parameter datasets encompassing both biotic and abiotic variables. This will significantly advance understanding of oceanographic processes and enable comprehensive monitoring of natural and anthropogenic impacts on deep-sea ecosystems. EMSO-Azores-Condor operates in strict accordance with FAIR data principles and international standards to ensure data interoperability and accessibility.
As a key component of EMSO-PT—the Portuguese national infrastructure contributing to EMSO—and complementing other EMSO nodes in Cádiz, Northern Portugal, and Lucky Strike (EMSO-France), EMSO-Azores-Condor is set to become integrated into EMSO-ERIC. This integration will provide high-value open-access data to the global scientific community. Furthermore, as part of the COPERNICUS programme’s deep-sea observation efforts, EMSO-Azores-Condor supports open data policies consistente with GEOSS, fostering collaborative science and evidence-based decision-making for sustainable ocean management.

The Atlas Reproductive Biology of the Macaronesian Flora will be directed to the investigation of the two great "pillars" of that botanical discipline: sexual systems (SS) and self-incompatibility systems (SI) in Macaronesian island taxa, where studies have not done more to start (MACFLOR project, ongoing). This research is based on reproductive models for the detection of population reproductive success (viable seeds and vigorous progeny) and / or potential reproductive failure due to the disappearance of certain individuals susceptible to produce fertile crosses. The project is of great interest for the Conservation because it will generate effective recovery strategies. Macflor2 will contribute to the knowledge of reproductive systems in unexplored species by providing new data for the detection of possible reproductive failures as one of the threat risks of macaronesic endemics, data that will be incorporated into the Atlas files.

Seguimiento, control y mitigación de proliferaciones de organismos marinos asociadas a perturbaciones humanas y cambio climático en la Región Macaronésica

Acrónimo
MIMAR+ - UAc

Resumo Inglês
As it has been verified with the execution of the MIMAR project, several scientific studies have shown an accelerated process of tropicalization of the marine biota in the macaronesian area, correlated with the increase in the sea surface temperature. This has favored the arrival of species from tropical areas and the natural expansion of their distribution. In this way, new species populate the marine habitats, being able to modify the ecosystems and affecting the uses and activities of the coast, and human health. These agencies arrive by their own means or favored by maritime transport. To conserve biodiversity and protect the health of the inhabitants of the region, it is necessary to know and measure the changes that are occurring in the most important habitats, identifying new threats to health and human activities with the execution of the MIMAR project, now it is necessary to deepen early detection and acting

Combinar amostras de ADN ambiental, observação de baleias e ciƟzen ciência para a biodiversidade marinha orientada pelas partes interessadas proteção Nordeste do Atlântico e no Mediterrâneo

Acrónimo
eWHALE

Resumo Inglês
The biodiversity in the earth’s oceans is under acute pressure from natural and anthropogenic threats and marine ecosystems already exhibit high rates of biodiversity change. The sheer vastness and inaccessibility of most marine habitats challenge monitoring efforts and the creaƟon of high-resoluƟon long-term biodiversity datasets necessary to guide policymakers. On top of that, societal support for the protecƟon of marine biodiversity is key for the implementaƟon of bold conservaƟon strategies. However, most marine taxa are not in the public spotlight and remain hidden beneath the ocean surface. The eWHALE project will meet the above challenges, unite researchers, industry partners and the public across Europe, and implement stakeholder-driven marine biodiversity protecƟon by combining environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling with whale watching and ciƟzen science. As such, this project will provide a much-needed proof of concept for ocean-wide parƟcipatory biomonitoring.

Análise, Mitigação e Gestão do Risco de Movimentos de Vertente Potenciados pelas Alterações Climáticas na Macaronésia

Acrónimo
PRISMAC

Resumo Inglês
The sustainable development of outermost regions, where adverse meteorological factors, whether or not exacerbated by climate change, are the cause of environmental imbalances in ecosystems and natural disasters, requires a set of sophisticated analyses of the surrounding processes for their understanding, analysis and mitigation. The geomorphological evolution of volcanic islands is shaped by geomorphological processes, namely landslides, which represent a serious constraint on human activity and ecosystems. In addition, they constitute a considerable source of risk to people and property, so it is crucial to strengthen their knowledge and increase resilience and adaptability to this climate-related risk. The main objective of PRISMAC is to analyse, mitigate and manage natural risks, in particular the risk of landslides, exacerbated by climate change. The project aims to develop and harmonise methodologies for analysing the susceptibility and risk of landslides, with a view to identifying risk areas for the development of monitoring, warning and alarm systems for landslides, at local and regional scales, for each region. The project also aims to disseminate knowledge among the partners involved, train the entities involved in responding to disaster situations and improve the mitigation of the risk of landslides.
